Summer Solstice 2022: taking chances without sacrificing emotional connections and security

For the next thirty days, the Sun travels through the sign of Cancer, reminding those born under that sign that they have a personal journey to follow and to align or realign themselves with that journey. This year particularly, they will feel the urge to broaden their horizon and take chances with their destiny. But in order to respond to this urge, that would mean leaving behind that which has become familiar and cozy in their lives. Not a small feat for them.

Late natives of the sign of Cancer (persons that were born between July 11 and July 22) may be cornered into life altering choices in late winter 2023.

In the Mythic Tarot by Juliet Sharman-Burke and Liz Greene, the sign of Cancer is ascribed to the King of Cups card of the minor arcana.

In the Mythic Tarot by Juliet Sharman-Burke and Liz Greene, the sign of Cancer is ascribed to the King of Cups card of the minor arcana.

The image of the card is linked to the mythic figure of Orpheus who was able to subdue the King and Queen of the underworld in an attempt to rescue his beloved, Eurydice, using nothing but his lyre and his voice.

Orpheus and Eurydice – work by Emily Balivet. This painting depicts the lack of faith of Orpheus who looks behind him, forever losing his Eurydice.

In the Tarot, this card describes the mastery one can achieve in matters of the heart and soul.

Cancers need a vocation which requires an emotional investment, either to cater to their own needs for emotional safety or to those of others. An ideal vocation for Cancers will be connected to the past, the family, children or animals. The connection can be personal or impersonal such as taking care of the land or preserving the collective memory through works of art and literature.

But just like Orpheus, looking back at the safety of the past and clinging to the close connections they have built can often block them towards greater independence and a true feeling of personal achievement.

This year, tension between self-assertion and preserving their emotional connection to others as well as loyalty to their past and roots may be the cause of great tension in the lives of individuals born under the sign of Cancer, particularly for those persons born in the first degrees of the sign (June 21–July 1). If the tension between wanting more freedom and preserving emotional ties to the past can be resolved, the Cancer natives will feel freer and in greater control of their destiny.

If they do not cling to the past, their future will open up. The train stops now: time to hop in!
